7. Man's Face in the Moon

Enemies: None
Treasures: None

After you thwarted Zeromus and restored balance to the Earth, did you sit through all the credits? Or were you so pleased with yourself that you just shut your Gameboy Advance off, thinking you had completed your quest? Oh, dear gamer, you were an idiot, so, here’s a tip. When you’ve finished watching the excellent ending the game has to offer, refrain from shutting off the game as the credits scroll. It’s tough, I know. Nobody really cares who the chief operating programmer is. But when you finish sitting through it, you’ll notice that a new dungeon appears on the surface of the moon.

Before you take on this new dungeon though, a disclaimer. This dungeon is long and very tricky. The sequencing is never the same. One time through the dungeon, you may visit rooms in a completely different order. You will not see all of the rooms in a single run through the dungeon. You may even need two or three times through the dungeon just to get to all the trials you want. And while we sure did our best in trying to cover it all, some things are bound to be missed with a dungeon as arduous as this one, so do forgive us and let us know what we missed by posting at the forums.

Before entering this dungeon, it might prove worthwhile to defeat Zeromus with every playable character. After defeating the big blue Z, you will notice some dialogue boxes claiming that a certain job’s door is open. This is alluding to the new trials that await that specific character; these doors only open after a character has completed the final main-game battle. Note that a character must be in the final party to unlock the trial, but that character needn't be alive to do so.

With all that said, what are you waiting for? You just ripped the moon a new one. Seriously, there’s a new hole in the moon that is worth investigation. By now you know that your party is completely up to you. I suggest always keeping your options open by mixing it up as much as possible. Along with Cecil, take at least one healer (Rosa or Porom) and a black mage (Palom or Rydia) with the remaining spots divided between the powerhouses and jacks-of-all-trades (Yang, Kain, Edge, Cid, and Edward). That makes the progression slightly easier, but it’s all up to your preference, at least to an extent. In order to do a character's trial, though, that character has to be in the party, so don't forget!

The entrance is northeast of the Crystal Palace right behind the stone face—one must wonder if that little Easter Egg from nearly two decades ago was intended for more from the very beginning! Once you step in, you’ll find yourself in an environment similar to the moon’s core. From here, the random floors will be divided up into segments, as they are randomized and not always in the same order nor in the same frequency for all players. Not even all the trials will show up on a given runthrough. So, if you did not have a chance to experience all 5 of your characters’ trials, it might behoove you to warp out when you reach the end and run through it again.

The Lunar Ruins are divided into two types of areas: Floors of Remembrance, which are rooms that look exactly similar to areas you had visited prior in the game; and new areas which will simply be labeled as Lunar Ruins.
