Japan Gets Final Fantasy VI on the Virtual Console
Coming sometime in March, Final Fantasy VI will cost 900 Wii Points, a little higher than the standard cost for Super Famicom games. Like other VC games, this will be a largely-untweaked port of the original SFam/SNES release. There's no word yet whether it will get the same treatment for the West, though I wouldn't be shocked to see it over here quite soon.
Who knows, perhaps it will have some bearing on that FF6 remake that so many people want to see on the new Nintendo portable. If you have a Wii and under ten bucks to drop, maybe give it a go if and when it gets here, eh?

Final Fantasy V and VI DS Remakes Uncertain
The response was an answer to numerous fan questions regarding the release of certain Square video games. Hashimoto's reply to all of them was that they were "at present undecided," and that Final Fantasy V and VI in particular had technical difficulties.
Now, as to what technical difficulties, I can't be certain because the details are vague. It does seem very likely that we will have to wait quite some time for these already long-awaited ports.

What we Know About Final Fantasy VI Advance
New confirmed espers: Gilgamesh and Leviathan.
Extra dungeon: Supposedly you'll navigate it with a three party setup similar to Kefka's tower.
Bestiary and Music player: Confirmed, but who didn't see that coming?
Enchanced Graphics: Confirmed, but again, who didn't see that coming.
Now this is just speculation, but, we think they've also indicated there will be a new element, but there's no actual statement of what it is. It's probable that the element is Water, to go with Leviathan, and it seems likely to me that Bismark will gain Water, Maduin will gain Water 2 or Watera, and Leviathan with teach Water, Water 2, and Water 3. As for Gilgamesh, I really can't even guess. There also seem to be indications of a Monster or Boss Rush mode.
So let's make like schoolgirls and gush and gush and gush about our favorite game.

RPGOne Releases Unofficial FF6j Translation
If you ever saw Sky Render's project named "End of Fantasy", this is where it ended up. It's a complete retranslation from scratch, foresaking Ted Woolsey's FF3US efforts. The readme claims that the translation is primarily focused on accuracy, with readability second, and that it tries to keep some name consistency with the more recent official Final Fantasy translations where they are sufficiently close to the original Japanese.
Bear in mind that translation is a somewhat subjective issue, and that there's no 100% right or wrong way to translate something between languages. Any comments on this forum from players of this version insisting that they have played a "DIRECT translation" so that their interpretation of an event is bound to be absolutely correct will be met with severe beatings about the face. That said, I'd recommend trying it out to anyone who can do so, as it probably is indeed more faithful to the original game than the official translations (which had to pass through Nintendo's still overzealous censors at the time).
Note that you need a Japanese Final Fantasy VI ROM to apply the patch, and that it can't be combined with modifications for FF3us, such as i90east's expert versions. The download does include an optional patch to prevent Vanish/Doom from working, for anyone who wants a little extra challenge.
Interested? Head over to RPGOne's Final Fantasy VI download page and grab a copy. I encourage you to check out the readme first of all, if only for known issues and patching instructions (though the procedure should be familiar if you've used IPS patches in the past). Finally, please read lead programmer ChrisRPG's message and donate to him if you appreciate his work and have some cash to spare.
