3.18: Interdimensional Rift; the Forest

Enemies: White Flame, Moss Fungus, Farfarello, Calofisteri

Treasures: Dragon Fang, SwordEnhancer, HelmetRibbon, RodLilith Rod

Blue Magic: OWhite Wind, OPond's Chorus, OLilliputian Lyric

It is said that evil beasts were sealed into the Rift; right along with the forests and caves they were living in! Oh, my...

White Flames are much more easily taken care of than their palette swap brethren, luckily. They do absorb OHoly, but this is White Flame's only significant defensive trait. Their third and fourth turns could theoretically be spent using OWhite Wind, but they'll be dead by then. 1600 HP isn't much.

Moss Fungus is said to grow on the graves of poisoned people. They're weak to Fire- and Water-elemental attacks; Leviathan works out nicely. They attack physically, but beware: !Knock Silly sets Confuse. They can also employ Web and Spore to set Slow and Poison. If you use !Lance on one, they'll have a 66% shot at countering with Rainbow Wind, so, eh, don't use !Lance. Let's be honest here, though; have you ever used !Lance?

Farfarello are tiny little trickster wizards that either steal your resources with ODrain or OOsmose or sing a happy little tune (either OPond's Chorus or OLilliputian Lyric). They come with inherent Protect, so physical attacks aren't your route. Strong multi-target magical attacks work much better; they're weak to OBio spells. You can steal a rare RodLilith Rod from these encounters, but you can also find one in a chest here, making this unnecessary.

Leviathan slays all encounters found here with a single Tidal Wave. Make sure to protect against OConfuse; you can use a HelmetLamia's Tiara, ArmorRainbow Dress, AccessoryRed Slippers, ArmorBone Mail or the OBerserk ability to do so. Remember: HelmetRibbons do not protect against OConfuse. ArmorMirage Vests also make sure you dodge at least one !Knock Silly, which is generally all you need before you get a Leviathan summon in there.

Just as in the Great Forest of Moore, your vision is impaired. Unlike the Great Forest of Moore, however, teleportation magic will do you no good: the OTeleport spell won't work here. Don't worry, I'll guide you through. Behind the first large tree you encounter on your path, you can find a chest with a Dragon Fang inside. When you press on further into the forest, you'll find a field; stick to the left to find a chest containing a HelmetRibbon. If you never stole one, this will be your fourth. Hey, status immunity across the board! Go down and find a chest with an SwordEnhancer. Go up again, leaning to the right, and you'll find the chest containing the RodLilith Rod.

The RodLilith Rod performs an attack similar to the !Flirt ability; when the strike is successful (you'll see a purple hit animation on the target, never works on a Heavy target), the target's next turn will be spent doing nothing. Any equipment that boosts !Dance and !Flirt also increases the success rate of the RodLilith Rod. 25% of the time, the Rod will follow up with an OOsmose attack. It's such a weird thing.

Following a narrow passageway to the right takes you to a tree with a hole in it. A tree spirit from the Forest of Moore? Sure enough, one of the things comes out to open up a passageway between the roots. But before you can press on, however, it seems not all tree spirits are helpful. Appearing from between the roots is Calofisteri, one of the Eleven of the Rift.

Strategy

Calofisteri really can't do that much damage to you, so the priority is keeping her debuffed using OEsuna and ODispel and beating her up. There's not much more attack strategy necessary.

Hey, another naked chick in the forest! But this one is blue... As a corrupted guardian spirit of the woods, Calofisteri is a subtle warrior. Her AI script changes whenever anyone on the battlefield has the Reflect status. When no one on the battlefield has the reflective barrier up, she will cast either OStop, OOld or OReflect (the last of which may provoke her to cast more damaging spells off of her). If the blue wonder has Reflect set but you do not, she will be able to cast OBio, OPoison, OOld and OStop on herself (which will then bounce back at you) to cause damage and disable; she may also randomly cast OReflect again, which bounces off her own Reflect barrier, thus setting the status on one of your characters (which in turn allows her to start buffing herself by bouncing beneficial spells off your party and back to her). Thus, if one of your characters has Reflect set, she will start casting OCura, OProtect, OEsuna, OShell, ORegen and OHaste on that character to give herself beneficial statuses; these can all be removed with ODispel, which works regardless of the Reflect status.

Whenever she takes damage, she will counter with a ODrain spell; aside from the very rare OBio spell, this is her only way of dealing damage. At around only 350 damage per spell, that's bad news for the naked blue chick in the forest.

Since so very few of her spells actually damage you, simply make removing her buffs and debuffs (with ODispel and OEsuna, respectively) a priority. She has no particular resistances, so, aside from the Protect, Shell or Reflect statuses she may put up, damaging her is not a problem. Since she is both a Humanoid and Magic Beast, the KnifeMan-Eater, WhipBeast Killer and BowArtemis Bow all punch right through to the heart of the matter. Using Silence spellblade, OSlow/Romeo's Ballad or OOld aren't all that necessary, but, since Calofisteri is obviously used to playing with her prey, it might be fun to do the same to her before you show her that annoyance tactics are neither fun nor productive in the long run.

When you're done here, pass beneath the tree to enter a cave.
