Final Fantasy VII
Sony State of Play for September and More Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest
Sony’s State of Play for September just wrapped, and as our beloved reader should probably fully expect, it featured among its games (and movie) both of the new Final Fantasy games coming up.
Final Fantasy Resonance appeared early in the presentation; the bulk of the content was compiled from prior trailers, but at the end, Square Enix showed the first bits of Sephiroth in cutscene and as an opponent, and also announced that the demo is available starting today in advance of the October release. At the time of writing, I don’t see the demo online but I’m also not in front of my consoles so it may already be there.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation got ten full minutes of video and gameplay today, which is a bit of a surprise to me given that Tokyo Game Show is two weeks away and I’d assumed the next big reveal would happen there. In the lead-in, Sid Shuman of Sony called this the “release trailer,” which honestly doesn’t sound accurate based on the release timeline and the content of the trailer, but we will see. I’ll warn you here that if you’re not caught up on the series yet, some of this post is going to feel spoilery from here on out. Some of the highlights:
- The absolute briefest glimpse of Zack and Aerith together outside Aerith’s house, with Aerith’s face registering shock. The look was so brief that it’s impossible to work out the context, but based on Rebirth, I would say there’s probably a pretty reasonable guess.
- The return of Piko and his ability to fight; it looks like Piko gets a glow-up either by default or through customization, and the party’s chocobos are able to participate with mounted combat now.
- The FITS system information seemed a little confusing based on what had been presented before; I was under the impression that FITS would have some variation per-character, but today’s video implied heavily that there were only four available and all characters would be choosing from the same ones. Cid was shown using the Knight class, with its tanking and party-protection attributes familiar from other Final Fantasy games, and Vincent was shown as a Summoner, with the ability to unlock synergy abilities with the summoned beast. The other two are Warrior, and Black Mage, which we briefly saw at Summer Game Fest.
- We also got a few minutes of gameplay within Wutai, featuring Yuffie grappling around the capital and taking cute cat photos. Rocket Town was explicitly mentioned just after this, but not shown.
- The gameplay stopped at Gongaga to be introduced to a quest for Cissnei, specifically to assist with protecting the Gongaga Youth Coalition and rid the area of Malboros. The main point in showing the quest was to remind us that FF7 Compilation characters would be showing up around Revelation, and also to reveal that sidequests will play out differently depending on who you choose to lead the quest. I assume that they’ve done this to increase replayability by making subsequent runs work differently.
- The last big gameplay reveal was a first live look at Queen’s Blood. An all-new questline will be part of Revelation, with Red XIII as the protagonist; a short look at gameplay against Regina was shown, with some sort of special card played during the draw, but it wasn’t exactly clear how it changed the game from Rebirth.
A release date of April 8, 2027 was announced at the end of the trailer, which is certainly later than I was hoping; I’d legitimately hoped February for synergy with Rebirth, but Remake itself launched in April as well. Hamaguchi said (in the subtitles) that preorders for a “Trilogy Edition” would open today, but the standalone third game wasn’t specifically mentioned. Seems like those preorders should be coming very soon, though, if not today with the full bundle.
In the State of Play Japan that started immediately after the English SoP ended, Squenix also showed a little bit of gameplay and cutscenes from the new Dragon Quest Monsters game that releases on December 3. I won’t embed that video here because this post is already massive, but the game looks very much exactly what you would expect from a new DQM game.
New Final Fantasy VII Revelation Trailer from Gamescom
If you're reading this, you probably missed our watchalong in Discord, but you're ready to see the new trailer. Despite Hamaguchi being on stage to present the new video, the overall showing was pretty brief today; it was another quick-cut video showing a lot of things that we expected to see at some point or knew we would see in the near future, but it was welcome all the same. In brief, it was a Weapon-heavy trailer, leading with Rufus discussing the "many threats" to the world, including both Meteor and the Weapons. Ruby, Emerald, and Ultima weapons all got shown with fancy title cards just after. The summon Typhon got a first look, as well as a brief look at Wutai and a couple brief scenes from the Gelnika, proving that the underwater sequence will not be cut from the Remake series. A little bit of gameplay was interspersed among the other clips; from first glance it seemed to be missing the UI that was shown in the prior trailer, but it did show some new chocobo riding and Tifa and Cloud leveraging FITS. I'm posting this before watching again, but unfortunately, I don't think we got anything absolutely brand-new beyond what I've already called out. Tell me I'm wrong wherever you like.

Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis Ends Service in October
When announced, the game had two big selling points to players; first was the potential to replay the original stories of Final Fantasy VII, and second was to experience a new story that predated the events of Crisis Core. Of course, the gacha element also brought in many of the hallmarks of that genre, such as content crossovers and unique cosmetics, some of which I must say were pretty fun.
It appears that before end-of-service, the game will complete the original Final Fantasy VII storyline, as well as an event that will cover the story of Before Crisis, marking the first time that game will have an official localization outside of Japan. However, there is no roadmap for any further content in the First Soldier storyline, which I find unfortunate given that plot has been canonicalized in Remake - and one would presume that it will expand further in Revelation.
There have been no announcements regarding whether any of the story-driven content may live on in another form, though the recent announcement of Final Fantasy Resonance may not rule it out in the long run.
It’s Revelatory: Final Fantasy VII Remake Series Ends in Revelation
And that’s just what happened; we got a lot of information about the final game today, including the subtitle, trailers for both scenery and gameplay, and a release window. Here’s what I saw, but correct me where I’m wrong.
The initial action drops straight into the Highwind with the party on board, with a parachute mechanic to get where they’re going. Some brief glimpses of Wutai and Midgar appear first, with a bit of combat from new party members Vincent and Cid - nothing unexpected there. Some scenes revealing the Weapons (who seem based on the voiceover work to possibly not be optional bosses any more), the tiniest glimpse of Tifa in a new costume blasting magic, and a scene of the party surrounded by Whispers and Aerith’s flowers… and the name reveal of Final Fantasy VII Revelation. That’s all in the reveal trailer below; check out the thumbnail, which has a very Renaissance-era Biblical quality to it that you might expect from the name:On stage at Summer Game Fest, though, it continued, with Matt Mercer, voice of Vincent, coming on stage with Hamaguchi to talk through a few more details. Hamaguchi explained that the theme of the game to him is “Resolve,” which is interesting because that could have also been a subtitle for the game. Mercer describes the general scenario for the game, covering the Highwind, the arrival of Meteor, and the new locations you’ll see including Mideel and Wutai. They imply pretty heavily that there will be a more open world with less linearity, which makes sense.
From there, they show more combat; the combat system looks every similar to Rebirth, though it appears that characters can have multiple summons available now. Square Enix were willing to show Ifrit being summoned, but eagle-eyed watchers can see Magic Pot and Titan also in the menu.
We got to see more combat detail for the new fighters, including Vincent turning into the Galian Beast mid-battle and even apparently having Synergy abilities to use while in that form; we also got to see Cid’s rapid strikes with his lance and Dragoon-style combat traversal, as well as an area of effect attack.
The biggest combat reveal, though, was Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear, or FITS. This came absolutely out of the blue, but it appears to be a job system for everyone, giving different movesets and costumes for all the playable characters. The characters can stay as “Freelancers,” apparently retaining the combat abilities we’ve gotten used to over the last two games, but can change into specialties as well. The only two seen in the stream are “Warrior” and “Black Mage,” so it’s unclear both what other ones might exist and whether each character only gets a few of them or if they are available globally. In the video, Cloud has access to Warrior and Tifa has Black Mage, with Cait Sith shown in some other sort of mage robes and Barret in heavy technical-looking armor.
The pair on stage cut to one last video: Sapphire Weapon attacking Junon. It looks fantastically powerful, as one would expect. It was the last glimpse before the release window: Spring 2027. So, sadly, we won’t have it for Christmas this year, but we certainly look to be getting it day-and-date for all platforms. So there you have it, the Revelation Reveal. I hope you’re as excited as everyone in my house was!
Switch 2 Direct Shows Two Square Enix Games
For Square Enix fans, two titles in particular would be of interest, but neither are new. Bravely Default Flying Fairy was presented as a launch title for Switch 2 on the release date of June 5, 2025; this, the first game of the series, released for the 3DS in 2012. The remaster for Switch 2 will upscale the game and adjust the UI to suit, as well as add some new minigames. The online features from the original have been ported in as well.
Additionally, Squenix confirmed the long-standing rumor that Final Fantasy VII Remake would arrive on the Switch 2. This was not presented as a launch title, as far as I'm aware - the stream had some technical difficulties right before the announcement and I have not yet seen the complete video from that portion, just the audio. The version to be released will be the Intergrade version released for PlayStation 5 and PC, meaning it will include the additional Yuffie content. This of course implies that Rebirth may eventually come to Switch 2 as well, but that was not addressed in today's Direct.
Unfortunately, no announcements for anything Final Fantasy IX today, as many were hoping for - but there's still a few months before we hit that 25th anniversary.
