1.27: Crescent and the Black Chocobo

Enemies: Doublizard, Bio Soldier, Harvester, Black Flame, Harvester

Blue Magic: ODark Spark

Features: Piano, Mighty March

The people and Jachol talked about how there was something underneath Crescent Island. When talking to the people here, it seems the soil is especially fertile but strange noises well up sometimes, and there are earthquakes. An inconveniently timed earthquake swallows up the Fire-Powered Ship as well, stranding you on the Island. Let's look around.

Armor Shop: You shouldn't need to buy either, but if you find yourself lacking a frontal lobe, this is your chance to redeem yourself.

Weapon Shop: Four weapons for Jobs you haven't obtained yet. You will soon, though. You'll win an BowFrost Bow in a boss battle not very long from now, and there's a chance you won a BowFlame Bow from Liquid Flame earlier. The BowThunder Bow is the only one of interest anyway, so if you want to utilize a possible archer-like Job, buy that one. The HarpSilver Harp is a horrible weapon. Rather than dealing physical damage or even dealing physical damage depending on your Magic Power (like Bells do), Harps simply cast a spell specially designed to be used by said Harps. The notes coming out of the HarpSilver Harp deal exactly 1/16 of the target's current HP. Useless. Also requires two hands to be used.

In a house to the south-east, there's a bard living by himself. He'll teach you Mighty March, which sets ORegen on all characters. Not all that good, but can't hurt. He then urges you to play some tunes on his piano, but even though you can (and should) play the piano here, it's apparently not good enough for him to compose any new songs.

Some dude mentions a Black Chocobo in the forest. Legend has that these creatures are able to fly, which is a precious ability since we've lost our freaking Fire-Powered Ship and we need to get out of this place.

The only new enemy here is Harvester. His business in attacking you is unclear, but he carries some neat weapons around. He has a common BowSilver Bow to Steal (useless to equip now that you have access to elemental bows which are slightly stronger, but great for selling) and will rarely drop a AxeDeath Sickle. The AxeDeath Sickle is a great weapon. It's extremely powerful and has a 33% chance of casting ODeath, which is an incredibly awesome side-effect that will even affect some bosses. If you ever want to use one of those spiffy Berserker employees, now's the time. Two-handed is AxeDeath Sickle's best friend, obviously.

The tiny forest to the south of Crescent? Enter the middle square and you'll enter the forest. Here's the Black Chocobo. With Bartz, you get to catch it. If you want to quit, you can always talk to your fellow teammates. The Black Chocobo basically runs until it hits an object (the side, a tree, Bartz), then randomly picks a direction it wasn't running to previously and starts running that-a-way. Catching it isn't that hard.

It won't fly properly, though. Faris smacks two Crystal Shards out of the bird; the two Crystal shards from the Fire Crystal we hadn't recovered yet! Finally, the Bard gives us a way to utilize the two Songs we have learned. It's also capable of equipping the crappy HarpSilver Harp. The Ranger gives us a way to deal with the Bows. Note how Faris, Lenna and Galuf are apparently lighter than the two Crystal Shards.

There's the Ranger and the Bard that have been added to your options. Both have their void to fill in this game, so let's take a look: the Ranger is another Job which is hard to classify, so I suggest you learn a bit about what they are and how they perform. They learn !Animals after 15 ABP, which is a great action ability for any mage to have. They're most notable for their capstone ability !Rapid Fire, which is made of awesome.

The Bard has low stats and very poor equipment options, but !Sing is really awesome. Multi-target unblockable OConfuse status? Sign me up. Romeo's Ballad sets Stop to all targets for another way of powerful and free de-buff action.

Now that you have the Black Chocobo, our direct mission objective is going to the Library of the Ancients and talk to Cid and Mid and complain about our lack of modus transporendi. However, first you should make sure that you've found a AxeDeath Sickle if you have any intention of being awesome. Also, there's some other things we can do before finding Cid and Mid, and since the latter are boring anyway, I suggest we do them first.

Note: never park the Black Chocobo in the middle of this forest, as you'll have to catch it again.

Jackanapes-slaying: If you have OLevel 5 Death at your disposal, kill Jackanapes with it. That's not difficult!

If you have Two-Handed on a character, you can finally get by Jackanapes without too much hassle. The AxeDeath Sickle is a bonus but the AxeOgre Killer or AxeWar Hammer also work. Get a Thief in your party (for the Vigilance support ability) and stick everybody in the Back Row. !White and !Time casters are nice to have around. Sleep at the Walse Inn first to replenish HP (and more importantly, MP). Now, every time you run into Jackanapes you must rely on your Berserker to kill it. Remember, the Berserker won't act until the other three have acted, so either !Steal, Def. or cure a little. Set Haste on the Berserker and Slow on the enemy. Now, just wait until the Berserker kills Jackanapes; instantly revive and/or cure hit party members. Again, 1000 Gil x 2, the OSpeed spell and an AccessoryElven Mantle!

If you don't, too bad. There'll be other times.

Let's go to the last town we haven't visited yet, the town of Lix. It's located to the northwest of the Wind Shrine, is surrounded by weak monsters, forest and mountains.
