13. Cecil's Trial

Enemies: Giant Warrior, Lunar Odin
Treasures: SwordLightbringer, SwordFlandango, SwordDark Sword, Scrap Metal, Lunar Curtain

When you enter Cecil’s trial, you’ll first come to a long hallway that looks like a hallway in Baron. A disembodied voice becomes startled when he realizes Cecil is a paladin. And like all scary mysterious voices, he’s going to test you with a series of challenges. And like the Lunar Ruins itself, Cecil’s trial is completely randomized; however, nothing short of a full reset or reboot will change the order once you enter the trial (sorry, save-staters). There are certain challenges that will present themselves one time through that won’t be there next time you play through.

Apple a Day

Another easy-peasey challenge, this old man has lost his Golden Apple, which he needs to give to a "client." Interesting choice of words, but of no consequence. Just look for the sparkly thing around this room, because apples of gold always sparkle. Bring it back to the old man, and you're on your way again.

Chocobo Rancher

A little girl can't control her chocobos. Now, the "School of Hard Knocks" would say that you should just let them run free, and teach the little girl a lesson about biting off more than she can chew. But that's not the Paladin way, so you need to go and capture all the birds (as if you were capturing them in a Chocobo Forest) and then return to talk to the girl.

Don't Harass Pigs

When you enter the garden, you’ll notice a group of kids picking on a pig. When you gain control, go up to the kid who’s blocking the entrance. Your mighty Paladin stature will scare him off. Cecil gets after school special on the bullies, and they scamper away after getting taught a lesson on courage. The pig boy will thank you. Make your way to the door on the top right.

Honor Above All Else

Cecil enters the home of a citizen, who immediately comes over and asks to tell a story. He drags you to the table and begins talking about his wonderful treasure, which you can see in a chest off to the side. Before he gets too far into the story, though, he falls into an unwakeable old man sleep, and you're left to your own devices. Ignore the chest and continue on to pass this test.

Irresponsible Guards, Part One

Cecil will be in the courtyard where he’s confronted by guards. “Hey, let’s ask him,” one of them will say. He’ll tell you a story about his pregnant wife, but his job demands him to remain at is post. Cecil expresses remorse. The guard asks if Cecil can take over his duty while he checks on his wife. He tells Cecil the code of conduct... Don’t speak, don’t move. Pretty simple to remember. When you take over his position, do just that: do not move. But several times, things may tantalize you to move, including a chocobo dropping a shiny stone, as well as a man being chased by bombs. The soldier will come back promptly if you didn’t move with good news on his baby and wife. Head to the door on the right, and up the hallway.

Irresponsible Guards, Part Two

Around a hallway, there is a guard protecting a treasure chest. When prompted, he’ll ask you for a favor. He needs to run an errand, but doing so would leave the treasure chest unguarded. It’s Cecil’s task to take his spot. Seriously, what’s up with all these useless guards? It's no wonder you can pillage virtually every chest in this game. Just to tempt you, he alerts you that a holy sword lies in the chest, and it must be protected at all costs. If temptation gets the best of you, the guard will bust through the door and stop you, leaving you to walk away in shame. But if you resist the urge and stand still for a minute, he’ll return ever grateful.

Lifeguard on Duty

A person is drowning in a town pond crying out to be saved. It’s now that you risk armor rusting by diving in and saving him. He’ll thank you, and all is well. Head up and out, oh fearless lifeguard.

Megalixir

On a mountain, you'll see an old man tending to a grave, and leaving behind an OMegalixir in tribute. Of course, that Megalixir might have been more useful for someone alive, but old men will do what old men want. But now, that Megalixir is for the dead, not for you. Walk on by.

Monster Crossing

In the courtyard of a sandy desert, a captain requests your help in detaining some rampant monsters. Here’s where you strut your stuff and beat the tar out of some baddies. After the thrashing, head to the door on the right.

The Notgoblin

Moving forward in this room, you'll cross a bridge, with a beast at the end. When you enter a battle with the Goblin, he'll tell you that he's not evil, just cursed. There's no harm in waiting around to see, of course, because even if he is a Goblin, how much damage could he possibly do? Once you finish the waiting game, you can move on.

Pottery

You'll see a bright and shiny vase just itching to be inspected. So inspect it. And then it will break into shards. To pass the trial, just own up to it when someone asks you what happened.

Thief!

As you enter the shop, there will be a clamor about thievery. No big shock, but you're going to see someone running by, looking pretty guilty, for a GBA sprite. So you have the choice to stop him or let him go, and you already know what to do. Be forewarned that you'll end up in an easy battle, though.

Of course, if we've missed one here, let us know in the forums; but, otherwise, just use common sense. Paladins are good, not evil. Don't steal, don't kill unless something's clearly trying to kill you, don't hook up with someone's girlfriend. That's a Dragoon's department.

When you finally get to the throne room, you’ll find the king waiting. You’ll find that he was the disembodied voice who sent you this task. Before you fight, he’ll grant you a weapon. Depending on how well you did on his tasks is what the weapon is. If you chose the virtuous paths worthy of being a paladin, you will get the ultimate weapon, SwordLightbringer. If you botched any of them, you’ll get the lesser SwordFlandango. If you go three-for five, you'll get the SwordCaliburn. If you’re cold and botch more than that, you’ll get a SwordDark Sword, which can only be equipped by dark knights. Of course, if you fail everything, you get Scrap Metal. When you wield the new sword, take on the king, who turns out to be Lunar Odin. Note that if you do this trial again, and you get the same number of correct trials, you will get a Lunar Curtain.

Strategy

Think back to your previous battle with the vicious swordsman. Lightning, OCuraja, and powerful physical attacks will be your best friends. Odin will consistently break out his favorite attack, Zantetsuken. If you're still under leveled, you probably won't survive that first strike as it blows 4000 off. Mixing it up, he'll bring a pretty moderate physical strike. Then he'll strike with an even more powerful Zantetsuken, marked by a different position of his sword. And just to throw even more pain at you, OHoly is also in his arsenal.
Prepare the Phoenix Downs and OThundaga. Doling out big time damage is the name of the game. Cecil with his new weapon will be a big part. If you took on this fight without Rosa or Porom, you are as good as dead. OCuraja is an absolute necessity. In fact, it might do good to have both of them in your party for this one to rapidly recover from the brutality of Zantetsuken. With Rydia or Palom, blast away with OThundaga. Have your heavy hitters smash Odin with their four-digit smashes. If you have Yang and have completed his trial already, here's where Deadly comes in real handy. If you have refrained from his trial, just have him smack down. If necessary, have one of your characters throw around the X-Potions you picked up on the way here. It'll take a lot of damage, rapid healing, and a little bit of luck, but he is beatable.

After his defeat, he’ll grant you his grimoire, claiming you are worthy of the light you hold. Huzzahs all around!
