Strategy

Characters with low HP are in danger from Manticore, but more resistant characters should have no problem dealing enough damage to knock it out. As it is not Heavy, it can be hit with things like !Flirt, ODeath Claw, and OGravity.

The Manticore isn't all that tough; physical attacks combined with OAqua Breath (300 damage to all) and Frost (250 to all, but adds Sap) isn't too bad, but know that these attacks can kill those with few Hit Points in two hits. The best way of dealing with the Manticore is exploiting its lack of Heavy nature and status vulnerabilities. The Dancer's !Flirt ability can cripple the creature easily. The Blue spells OMissile and ODeath Claw work, as do the OGravity and OStop spells from the Time spell book. And hey, you've still got a Two-Handed Berserker with the AxeGaia Hammer itching for business.

There are two items you can steal from the Manticore. The SpearWind Spear is a new Spear, but the SpearPartisan you could have obtained from the Sand Bear is quite a lot better and the Dragoon Job at this point really isn't all that grand, not even with the second-most powerful weapon we've got so far. The Dragon Fang is a Mix item so inherently inferior to a new weapon, but it's probably the first one you'll get your hands on and it expands your Mix movepool. It's a toss-up, but since the Dragon Fang is infinitely easier to obtain I'd just go for that one.

The Manticore shouldn't pose you with much troubles. It does, however, pose you with a Phoenix Down.
