Biography

Written by  Laszlow & footbigmike
Contributor / Former Staff Writer
Magus is a sorcerer residing in 600 A.D., where he and his army of monsters wage war against the humans of the age, particularly against the knights of Guardia Castle. It was he that slew Frog’s friend Cyrus and placed Frog in his current green-skinned form. If the player declines a rematch with Magus at a certain point in the game, then the magician will offer his services as a teammate.

Individually, Magus is extremely powerful. He has the highest Speed in the game (tied with Ayla), the best Magic, Magic Defense, and MP in the game, and below-average Power, Stamina, and HP. He also learns a wide variety of magic spells (all eight of his Techs are magic spells), including second-level Lightning, Fire, and Water magic, four Shadow-element attacks, and the OMagic Wall spell, which increases a character’s Magic Defense. He also has a powerful set of exclusive equipment. However, Magus’s weakness is his inability to play well with others. He learns no Dual Techs and only two Triple Techs, both of which require one character’s accessory slot containing a special item to enable the attack. His two Triple Techs are very powerful Shadow attacks, but do they really make up for lacking those other Techs when every other character has fifteen Dual Techs and at least five Triple Techs? Still, Magus can certainly hold his own in a party, with very powerful magic Techs and all-around solid stats making him a worthy addition to many teams in the endgame. However, if you make him a part of your team, your selection of Dual Techs and Triple Techs becomes that much more limited.

Additional Information

Magus isn't evil—he's just misunderstood. That annoying kid named Janus in 12,000 B.C? Yep. That's Magus. After Lavos kills Crono and sends everyone into different time zones, Schala is lost and Janus dedicates his life to getting revenge on Lavos and finding Schala. As he was sent to ~600A.D, the party believes that he is summoning Lavos to destroy the world. Interestingly enough, this is not the case—he is calling Lavos in order to fight him to the death. When his plans are unfortunately interrupted by your team, everyone is scattered in time once again, but this time Magus has been sent back to 12000 B.C. Posing as the Prophet of Zeal, his plan is to defeat Lavos before everyone is lost in time again. Ultimately, this fails, and it is at this point that he asks to join you on your quest to rid the world of Lavos.
