Final Fantasy I Walkthrough
7. Astos? Mo' Like Yo' [edit] is TOAST.
Return to Elfland to heal up, restock on Heal Potions and Pure Potions, and save your game. You’ll now be heading to the Northwest Castle, which is northwest of Elfland. Follow the same route you took to the Marsh Cave, but when you reach the coast, start heading north instead of south. You’ll eventually arrive at the castle, and you can feel free to approach Astos right away, as there are no accessible treasures at the moment (Key, again), and no encounters.

Astos isn’t hard, but he does have an instant-death attack, which is really irritating. As long as he doesn’t use that, the same strategies that defeated the WIZARD enemies will work here as well, though ICE2 will do more damage. Consider having your white magic users raise the defense of your characters with less HP. After the battle, you will receive the Crystal that Matoya was looking for.
After the battle, head back to Elfland to revive and heal your party. Then, hop in your boat and head back up to the Coneria area and go to Matoya’s Cave. When you give Matoya the Crystal, she’ll give you the Herb that you need to wake up the sleeping Prince of Elfland. So head back there next, and give the Herb to the man standing next to the Prince, who will then use it to awaken the Prince. As a reward, you are finally given the Key!
