17. Everyone Here Got Ugly, Man

Enemies: Baigan, Left Arm, Right Arm, Cagnazzo
Treasures: None

Ah, good old Baron Castle. It must be good to be home for Cecil. Well, maybe if he wasn't wanted for treason. At any rate, navigate yourself to the left and down the moat. Find the small step that brings you right into the kingdom. If you still need to heal, you can walk back up to Cecil's bedroom and sleep in the bed for free. Head for the door on the right that leads toward the throne room.

When you enter 1F, a voice will cry out for Cecil. It's the captain, Baigan. It looks like there might be a confrontation between the two for his return, but Baigan swears that he's disgusted with Golbez and will fight with you to defeat him. Congratulations, you just recruited the captain.

...But, wait a minute. The twins suspect something sinister from the new recruit. And they're right. Just as quick as he joins you, Baigan reveals himself as Golbez's minion, and his mission is to take out the trash... and, having recently come from the sewers, it smells like Cecil and his companions are the compost he's looking for.

This is probably the toughest battle yet. You have, not just one, but three different attackers coming at you. Baigan's attacks are merciless for someone who doesn't have high defense. The arms' attacks are deadly as well, as well as dealing some status effects. Left Arm can entangle an ally, leaving him paralyzed and unable to attack. RightArm will attack with Vampire, a drain effect that will keep your HP going down throughout the battle. Keeping HP up is extremely important if you want a real chance at winning this battle. Cecil should attack with his sword, preferably against the main body of Baigan. You could honestly do anything with Yang as it would all be effective, but keep in mind that Kick does only slight damage and Power takes too long to execute. Your best bet is to just attack with him. The twins and their heavy hitting twin magic play a big role again. Do whatever it takes to keep those two alive and keep using Twin magic. That leaves Tellah as the healer. And with the hefty damage that Baigan deals, it might be wise if you bypass using OCure2 and keep the HP high with OCure3. It does take more magic points from Tellah's already low amount, but it's better than having one of your key characters dying out. Occasionally, Baigan will cast OWall on himself. You'll have to risk using Twin magic from there as only one of the two spells ignores Reflect. The arms will die out pretty quickly as they don't have an extreme amount of HP. But if you don't defeat Baigan quickly after, the arms will revive themselves. So time is of the essence. It's a tough battle, but nothing close to impossible.

Once the battle is over, you can head back out and up to Cecil's room to heal up. If you really feel like it, you can run back to the save point in the Underground Passage to save up before you take on the real enemy.

Head to the throne room where your next challenge awaits. Time to show the king who's boss. And after thorough conversation, you discover what everyone was saying to begin with: the king is not himself. He transforms into his true form, that of the second Elemental Fiend. He introduces himself as the "Devil of Water". I hope you brought your arm floaties for this fight.

Strategy

Oh boy. Your second elemental fiend. Now is it me, or does he look like some sort of tortoise on steroids? Anyway. This battle can be relatively easy or painfully hard, it depends on your equipment and what level you're at. His normal attacks take off triple digits, so get the potions and healing magic ready. Cagnazzo's major attack is his Wave attack. You'll see signs of it coming though, to prepare yourself, as there will be a message indicator saying "Tsunami Warning!". The water dissipates after the attack. Also, there will be times when he hides in his shell and cures himself. When he's in this state, do not attack him or else get an unpleasant counter attack.
Now, the strategy as far as your characters goes. Have Cecil attack with his sword, as usual. If a character desperately needs HP, have him use potions. Have Yang attack normally, or if you have the time, use Power for him to deliver a hefty attack. Twin magic takes a backseat to weakness in this battle. Have Porom be the healer and cast OCure2 every turn she comes up. Meanwhile, Palom smacks the fiend with OBolt2, and Tellah uses that wealth of black magic to good use and crushes him with OBolt3. It will deplete his MP pretty quickly, in which case have Cecil or Yang give him an Ether. The name of the game is keeping HP up before he attacks with Wave, and keep Tellah's MP up so he can blast him with thunder. Cagnazzo should be laid to waste in no time.

After the battle, Cid makes his way into the throne room to lead the group to an airship to escape. But as soon as they make their way into the connecting hallway, Cagnazzo signs your death sentence and locks the door while having the walls move in on you. Teamwork shows the way out, and then it's time to soldier on.

Baron's no place for you now. Follow Cid to the airship and get the heck out of Baron. As soon as you take flight, however, another airship approaches. It's Kain coming to give you a proposition. The final crystal for Rosa. A hard bargain, but Cecil may have something up his sleeve, and he could never let anything happen to Rosa, so he has no choice but to comply.

After Kain leaves, you'll have control of the airship. Finally, some wings. To get to Troia, go northwest to the vastly forested area. There's only one spot to land the airship, right next to the castle. Head in to begin your next mission.
