18. Can't See the Forest for the Troia

Enemies: None
Treasures: OTwinHarp, OEther2, Illusion, 1000 Gil

First things first, head into the castle to talk to the clerics, who run the kingdom. After you talk with them, it becomes evident that someone had already stolen the crystal, but if you're willing to go get it back from the Dark Elf then they'll let you "borrow" it. Head back to the hall and head to the door on the left. Find your way to the guest room to find someone familiar. It seems that Edward survived and is recuperating in the kingdom. He wishes to rejoin your group, but his current status makes it hard for him to be of any help to you in battle. When you inform him that you intend to take the crystal back from the Dark Elf, Edward gives you his "substitute", the OTwinHarp. With that important item, you should take your leave. Exit the castle and head for the village.

The clerics gave you extremely valuable information about the cave which the Dark Elf roams in. There's some sort of force field within the cave that makes anything metal completely ineffective. So, you'll have to stock up on non-metallic weapons and armor. This means Cecil will essentially take a blow to both his attack and defensive power as everything good he's ever worn is metal. Don't buy the stuff they're selling in Troia; other towns, such as Baron, have better non-metallic equipment. Also make sure you have a viable weapon for Cecil—the only useful weapon he can equip that isn't metal is a bow and arrow. So make a stop at the weapon shop to get him a bow and plenty of arrows. Do not sell or leave behind your old equipment. If you're short on cash, do some fighting to stock up rather than part with anything shiny from your inventory.

As soon as you get that equipment, take a look around the village. There's a house in the northeastern end of town that is a black chocobo farm. You'll learn that black chocobos have the ability to fly, and that there is an area where you can find some in the northern part of the continent. Keep this in mind. There's another building right next to the item shop. One of the men there prompts you for a Pass. In the same building, a woman will sell you a Pass for 10000 Gil. Do not buy this yet, as it serves no greater purpose except entertainment value; instead come back when you have that much money to just throw away. If you head into the stream of water in which the girls are wading and follow it up to Namingway, then up the stairs and to the left through the forest, you'll end up in a patch of high grass that has some hidden treasures hiding in it, including an OEther2, Illusion, and 1000 Gil. As soon as you're done messing around, gear up and head out.

It might prove wise to take time to level up before moving onto the Dark Elf's cave as the enemies get tougher and tougher as you go through. It's best to have Cecil at level 18 or better before moving on. When you're ready, head due north from Troia. There'll be a chocobo zone at the northern most point of the continent. There's no place to land the airship near the cave, so you'll have to take flight by way of black chocobo. Fly east, around the mountains of the island until you see the mouth of the cave. You can only land a black chocobo in forest areas, which is convenient seeing the entire island is a forest. The chocobo will wait for you to get back (what a well-trained bird). Equip all the non-metal armor and weapons you can, then head in.
